My favorite thing about cooler weather is the excuse to drink heavier beers. I'm generally happier having a couple of well-chosen stronger brews than a bunch of easier sippers. This was my first beer from The Perfect Crime series, brewed by the Belgian company Scheldebrouwerij, and I'll definitely be looking for their other styles.
More effervescent than a typical stout, this beer had the maltiness of a traditional Belgian brown ale. I'd recommend having a couple of sips just to see what you're in for and then let it sit for a few minutes, which allows the flavors to become deeper and richer. This toasted brew tastes caramelly with slight mineral notes and a hint of bittersweet chocolate. It's smooth and doesn't let you know that it's packing a 10% punch, so be careful if you're having a couple. Good for when you've got a pile of wood to throw on the campfire and nowhere to go (you are at a cabin, right?). Crack open a couple of Smoking Guns (it even sounds cool), stretch your legs out, and get ready to settle in for some tall tales and star-gazing. --Brown.
